Dear Massacusetts Legislators, Governor Patrick, Mayor Menino, Chairman Groover and Superintendent Johnson,
NO to charter schools! No to in-district charters!
I hereby demand that you vote NO! on the bills to lift the cap on charter schools and to create in-district charter schools.
More charter schools will not address the issues of improving the quality of education our children receive. Raising the cap on charter schools will drain more funds and resources from our public schools, giving it instead to private for profit organizations including hedge funds and cineplex and real estate developers, without accountability. Those students who are most challenging to serve will be left in public schools with even fewer resources -- bigger class sizes, fewer teachers, and even fewer books. English language learners and special education students will be left out and left behind.
Similarly, In-District charters will do nothing to address the resources needed to turn around low-performing schools but will instead dismantle the legally binding union contracts and rights of hardworking education workers who extend themselves day in and day out for the best education possible for our children.
Federal stimulus and education money must be used to strengthen public education, not undermine it! Our tax money should be retrieved from the vaults of the banks and wall street firms and used for the needs of our school children!
